Communications Experience

–       I have been published over 30 times by the Winnipeg Free Press, including a feature interview with WWE Superstar and Winnipeg’s own Chris Jericho.  I have written breaking news, feature stories, and weekly features such as My Winnipeg, 7 Things To Do, and Senior vs. Senior.

–       Worked for The Manitoba Bisons writing online sports game recaps, PA announcing live at the games, and doing play-by-play and colour commentary on live web casts.  Have written over 60 game recaps for hockey, soccer, volleyball and basketball.

–       While working for DEL Communications, I received a lot of experience in writing on topics I wasn’t familiar with.  Some of the magazines I wrote for include The Manitoba Mining Review, Georgia School Bus, Building Western New York, The Brandon Business Review, Local Fare, and the BC Oil & Gas Report.

–       Five articles published in the Red River College newspaper The Projector.

–       Currently writing a blog called “Journo JT”: http://www.JournoJT.com

–       I’m well-versed in the workings of social media, and run four Twitter accounts myself.  I have a good understanding of how to use social media like Twitter and Facebook properly and effectively.

– Able to type at around 85-90 WPM.

Work Experience

The Fort McMurray Today – May 2012 to June 2013

Reporter: Work as the municipal affairs reporter, covering crime, government and traffic among a number of other city issues.  Responsible for generating interesting story ideas, interviewing subjects and writing clean, error-free copy on a deadline. Also required to take photos to accompany stories, and tweet on behalf of the newspaper.

Winnipeg Free Press – January 2012

Reporter: Worked for three weeks with the Free Press as an intern reporter.  Responsible for pitching story ideas, taking and writing assignments, and going out on location of breaking news to investigate.  Also gained experience in attending Winnipeg Jets games as media.

DEL Communications – April 2011 to September 2011

Managing Editor: Responsible for building the magazine BC Tugboat from the ground up.  Acquiring interviews, cultivating good story ideas, and creating an editorial ladder for the magazine.  Also worked as an in-house writer, writing articles for a number of different publications.

The University of Manitoba Bisons – September 2010 to Present

Reporter: Cover the Manitoba Bisons sporting events, specifically hockey, basketball, volleyball and soccer.  Responsible for writing game recaps, conducting interviews, contacting media sources, editing website, PA announcing, and announcing on web casts.
